Rising star drops new single

The musician has been going from success to success after he decided to go solo. He has recently released new music.

Phumulo Malatsi made a name for himself as ‘Physical Da Animal’ on stage after he separated from his kwaito music group, Vur Vai and went solo in 2011.

Malatsi left Vur Vai because he did not quite have the same vision as the group when it came to his craft. He said he released his first song titled, Move Back, as a solo artist, which marked his breakthrough into the music scene. He was booked and busy all over Joburg.

“I became visible in the streets and people started taking me seriously because my music was so raw and authentic. So, I started being an opening act when they booked big artists in Daveyton where I grew up.”

He has moved around since and is currently living in the Sunninghill area.

He said he has also had the opportunity to work with the who’s who in the entertainment industry, “You know the likes of Black Coffee, DJ Zinhle, etc. I got very inspired. The song felt like a prophecy because it speaks about people who only come into your life when it is time to harvest but never believed in you when you started. So, I was telling them to ‘move back’ and watch me do my thing.”

He is an all-rounder, he says, but his favourite music genre is kwaiyano. “That is because I’m trying to design something of my own because it is a mixture of old school kwaito and amapiano flavour on a slow jam vibe since I am inspired by the late musician, Prokid. I also rap in vernacular languages so that my music is relatable to the masses.”

His love for music dates back to when he was still a young boy. He said even though his family did not quite understand his aspirations at the time, he did not wish to drop the ball.

“The first day I saw Mzambiya on TV was the day I knew that this was a journey I wanted to take even though at home they thought it was just adolescence. But as I grew older, the passion also grew until it was visible and promising to those who were closer to me.

“The stage is my comfort zone. It is a place where I get to be free and forget about every problem I have. It is one of the moments I got blessed with in my life, you know, seeing people going crazy over my music and that motivates me to go even harder for as long as I live.”

Malatsi has recently dropped his much-anticipated single titled, Ama Kor Koti,[’empty tins’] in which he featured Khayelihle Sibisi who goes by the stage name KAE from the popular drama series, Smoke & Mirrors on etv.

“The single is taken from my upcoming album titled, Kwaito Renovation, set to drop before the end of this year. It is such a groovy song for those who love a good vibe.”
