Man survives death and has a selfie to prove it

Stuart Davies is smiling through the pain after he was involved in an accident on his way to visit a friend in Douglasdale.

He saw his life flash right before his eyes but that did not hold him back from celebrating his first near-death experience.

Stuart Davies was on his way to visit his friend in Douglasdale when a high-speed BMW car collided with his White Hyundai Elantra on its back at Douglas Drive in Fourways.

He said the accident happened on August 25 and he was not alone in the car. Davies recalled, “A friend of mine and I had just had a beautiful meal at Picollinos and were going to visit a friend. We were turning off the main road and a car collided with us from behind.”

“My friend heard the screeching brakes hurtling towards us and the next thing I remember I was on the floor surrounded by paramedics attending to the pouring blood. I lost consciousness.”

Stuart takes a selfie while in an ambulance.

He said his friend had two big cuts on the back of his head and was very shaken by the experience.

“I had a gash in the back of my head. I have stitches in the back of my head and a concussion. The injury I’m mostly dealing with is that my friend said he really started panicking when I couldn’t wake up and there was blood everywhere. He looks at me a little differently now – I think I do too,” Stuart explained.

Despite this traumatic experience that almost cost him his life, Stuart is smiling through the pain and finds it cool so much so that he even took selfies while being transported to the hospital in an ambulance after he regained consciousness.

“It was important for me to let people know I was alive and still enjoying my [first car accident] experience. I took the selfies because I wanted to send a picture to friends who had shown up in such a deep way moments after the accident happened.”

He tells us why this moment was also special for him, “I feel like sometimes after these incidents we get lost in the drama of ‘Oh this or that happened to me’ and forget that what happened has forced you to look at your life in a way you could never have imagined. I almost died. Okay, cool what do I really value, who do I really want to be, am I living the way I want to? Well, I almost died and I saw my ancestors and Jesus, and they sent me back laughing. So, I smile and become more myself, on a whole new level.”

Stuart James Davies survives to tell the tale.

When asked if he had received any word from the BMW driver, he said, “I did. I managed to get his details. I tried to call him but unfortunately, the structures we have in place have little room for compassion. And so, it’s really very difficult for him and me to engage because of liability or security. It makes my heart heavy to know that we have cultivated a culture where our priority is protecting the process rather than the humanity lost in it.”

Davies is a man full of gratitude for another chance in life and for the support that he received from those who are near and dear to his heart. He is recovering well with his friend at home.

“I was really honoured by the way my partner dropped everything that was happening for her and came to support at the hospital. I was grateful to be seen, stitched and scanned for head trauma. I’m very grateful that there are structures in place to assist in times like this and I would like to thank the paramedics who got in touch with me through the I Love Fourways Facebook group.”
