Casual Day becomes more special for Unity College

Unity College learners enjoy a fun day on Casual Day.

Learners with special needs from Unity College in Chartwell felt even more special during a fun casual day held at the school’s premises on September 01.

The day started with mass aerobics followed by an educational talk where learners were given an opportunity to engage with the SAPS Mounted Unit to learn more about how horses are used by police in prevention duties.

Lizzy Mabena shares the importance and order of the day.

Members of Douglasdale police, the CPF and parents were there to make the day even more joyful for the learners.

“The purpose of the event was to show love and care to the learners to ensure team building among the police members and strengthen police-community relations,” said Captain Mpho Tshetlane from Douglasdale Police Station.

Visible Police (VisPol) commander Moeti Senna echoed the same sentiments. He said it was an honour for the SAPS to come and celebrate the day with the children of Unity College under the theme, Share A Smile.

Captain Mpho Tshetlhane from Douglasdale Police Station joins in the learners as they wave their South African flags.

“This is an important day because it is the beginning of the year in Africa. The year does not start in January in Africa, but in September because the trees start getting green and flowers blossom. So, today we are saying that we need to share love and smile with you children. One of your fundamental rights is education as enshrined in the Constitution. It does not matter what abilities you have, you still have to be educated and show you can become anything you wish.”

School principal Jeanine Kerr was touched by the thoughtful gesture. She said the school feels special knowing that it is also recognised in society and thanked the various stakeholders involved.

Unity College learners have fun.

She added: “Last year when this day was celebrated, our school benefitted, our children benefitted and the other older people that came and visited us also benefitted in sharing a beautiful and happy day with us and enjoying the whole experience. These learners are sometimes the most vulnerable of the members of the society and just being here sends a strong message that they are appreciated and protected.”

The learners had fun playing games and exercising and interacting with the police horses.

Chairperson of the Douglasdale CPF Lizzy Mabena shares the importance and order of the day.

Senna declared Casual Day as an annual event for Unity College, leaving Kerr delighted. “Know that we love your children every day and night. Anything can happen to you – just know that the school and the guardians are also responsible for reporting any abuse or neglect that you may come across. The abuse against women and children is one of our priorities as police.”

The event was supported by various stakeholders including Douglasdale CPF, SAPS Employee Health and Wellness, SAPS Spiritual Service, and National Children Violence and Trust.
