Waste materials save bucks for local fine artist

Godfrey had to think of ways that were budget-friendly so that he could continue with his art.

When Godfrey Majadibodu’s love for art began to leave him financially overstretched, he had to think on his feet about ways that would save him money but still continue to set his soul alight. He said the first answer that came to his mind was using waste materials that he collects in his neighbourhood.

“I knew that fine art allows an artist to use just about anything to create. It is very common in our industry that you find an artist struggling with material because it is expensive, or it is too far to go to get what you need. So, you are not going to wait and hope for the best, you have to find something else and that is what I did.”

The 56-year-old said he invested all his attention in what he does because he does not really do it for fun, but mainly to express himself, tell stories, and also contribute to the economy.

“I used to work mostly with oil paints, even now I still do, so, I would spend more than R3000 just to get the kind of quality material that I needed for my work. It is very hard.”

He refers to most of his artwork as mixed media, “When I am busy with something I pick up recyclable materials or use whatever is available, for instance, I recently used the plastic that wraps the electronic wires to make something out of it, these wires were dumped though.”

He added that some of the waste materials that he uses include boxes and metallic products.

“It is all about finding something that you can use to continue with what you do. Artists these days use different methods to produce amazing work for their community.”

He said that what he loves about his work is the fact that he gets to do what he loves while keeping the environment clean and he has been doing it for the past 30 years.
