Fourways Mall Shopping Centre, a landmark in the Fourways area, recently accomplished a significant milestone by collecting an impressive 2.4 tons of gently worn clothing, shoes and bedding. This charitable initiative aimed to support the less fortunate during the winter season. The generous donations were made by members of the Fourways community and were handed over to the local nonprofit organisation, Daily Bread, for distribution to those in need.

The ongoing donation drive aims to galvanise community support for individuals in need within the Fourways area. There has been an overwhelming response from the Fourways community and the mall’s shoppers.

The initiative was first launched in 2021 in response to the devastating impact of the Covid-19 lockdown. Donation boxes were strategically placed in the mall’s busiest walkways with the vision of fostering a stronger sense of community and addressing the pressing needs of underprivileged individuals.
The initiative also highlights the importance of the impact of ‘fast fashion’ on landfill waste and creates a circular economy by donating unwanted and unused items to homes that will be able to use those items in a sustainable manner.

Group Marketing Head at Accelerate Property Fund and Fourways Mall, Maria Varfis said, “We are absolutely humbled at how our Fourways Mall shoppers have rallied around this cause. It’s a huge community initiative supported by Fourways Mall’s owners, JSE-listed Accelerate Property Fund and Azrapart.”

All the donated items have been entrusted to The Daily Bread Org, an NPO dedicated to supporting, empowering, and uplifting the community through outreach initiatives and education programmes. By partnering with The Daily Bread Org, the mall has ensured the efficient distribution of donations.

“Now in its third year, we firmly believe that together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals facing challenges within our community. The substantial amount of donations collected, speaks to the caring nature of the community. Fourways Mall has taken on the responsibility of ensuring these generously donated items reach those who need them most and that there is a stringent vetting process in place. It’s vitally important for us to partner with non-profit organisations that are community driven and aligned with our core values.

“We are therefore delighted to be working with the Daily Bread Org, which is committed to and embedded in the upliftment of our community,” added Varfis.

The Daily Bread Org founder, Charmaine McGinley said, “We are deeply grateful for the support and generosity shown by the Fourways community through their donations. These contributions will go a long way towards providing essential assistance to vulnerable individuals. Together with the mall and the community, we can create lasting change and make a positive impact on our community and our nation as a whole.”

Additionally, the mall creates employment opportunities around the initiative by hiring part-time workers to quality check, sort, package and process all donated items. This ensures that all donated items are in a usable or recyclable condition.

Categories that are collected include baby, children, ladies and men’s clothing and shoes, pet care items, non-perishable food, toys, homeware and linen.

Fourways Mall encourages individuals and organisations to continue supporting their mission by participating in the ongoing donation drive. Donation boxes can be found at three convenient locations throughout the mall.
