The incident leading to their arrest occurred on July 20 when police officers were conducting patrols in the vicinity of the Kyasands informal settlement. During their patrol, they were approached by an unidentified individual who claimed to have been a victim of a robbery in May. This person pointed out a suspicious vehicle that he believed was involved in the crime.

The police acted swiftly upon receiving this information and proceeded to investigate the matter. They located the mentioned vehicle and conducted a thorough search. To their surprise, they discovered an unlicensed firearm 9mm pistol and a stockpile of ammunition inside the car. The officers wasted no time in apprehending the five occupants of the vehicle, who are now the primary suspects in the case.

A preliminary investigation led the police to a house in Cosmo City where a similar vehicle was also recovered and linked to a Hillbrow case of fraud reported in April.
