Fourways paddlers make their mark
Alexia Smedmo finishes first at the annual 9 Miler Canoe Race as it returned to the Rietvlei Dam.
The annual traditional 9 Miler Canoe Race returned to the Rietvlei Dam and saw new stars shine. Fourways resident Alexia Smedmo (15) finished as the first female single kayak (K1) in 2:7:00 in the U16 category.
“I did not know I got such a good ladies’ K1 placing until I came off the water, I was very chuffed. The race was amazing, and well organised in a spectacular nature reserve. I was tired towards the end but gave it my all and had an absolute blast with the canoeing fraternity. I hope to beat a few more next time though, I can always do more,” said Alexia.
The day started with a chilly breeze before eventually warming up nicely in favour of the paddlers who also enjoyed the peaceful scenic countryside bordering the Rietvlei reserve. Paddlers had to paddle laps around the course set at the dam to make up the nine miles that are annually raced there.
The top male senior finishers were double kayak (K2) Wayne Jacobs and Bradley Boulle in a time of 1:25:12, while Karen Field and Gabriela van Rooyen were the top lady finishers in the long race.
Other local padders, Mark Garden and Ryan Rodda came out at 7th place and became the 2nd Sub Vets paddlers in a time of 1:30:00.
“I wish she was as addicted to Maths, something that has nothing to with canoeing, but she is happiest on the water and we are proud. She is mad about canoeing but only started properly with coaching this year. She is lucky and blessed to have built great friendships with the likes of Kayla Szalay and gets some amazing inspiration from her,” said Alexia’s father Clive.
