In honour of Mandela Day, Crawford International Fourways embarked on a meaningful project focused on collecting ingredients to feed those in need.

Their chosen initiative was ‘soup in a bag,’ a simple yet impactful solution to address hunger. The project started in April with each grade contributing a specific ingredient to assemble the bags of soup.
The learners and staff began their collection efforts to create 700 bags of soup, each containing a combination of rice, lentils, soup mix, stock cubes, and packets of instant soup. This carefully curated assortment of ingredients ensured that the recipients would receive a nourishing and flavoursome meal that would feed a family of four.

Tasneem Evans of Crawford International Fourways Preparatory said, “We were overwhelmed by our family’s contributions and in the end, managed to create 700 bags of soup.

700 soup bags are created and included are the instructions. ‘Soup in a bag’ feeds four people.

“On Mandela Day, we set up a production line in the school hall where each student got the opportunity to pack a Ziplock bag filled with all the ingredients. The ‘soup in a bag’ project was an opportunity for each child to get involved in a collective effort.
“The hands-on approach in packaging the soup gave each student the opportunity to learn empathy and gratitude. The teamwork that was required allowed all our students to collaborate and led to the school exceeding our expectations.”

She added that the significance of ‘soup in a bag’ lay in its ability to provide sustenance and simplicity. By combining these basic ingredients, the school aimed to offer a wholesome meal that was both cost-effective and easy to prepare. This approach ensured that the benefits of the learners’ efforts reached as many individuals as possible.
The collaborative effort displayed by the learners and staff exemplified the school’s commitment to making a positive difference in society.
“As a school, we seek every opportunity to give back to vulnerable people living in our community. We would like to thank our school community for their exciting commitment. Mandela Day gives us just one more opportunity to teach and reflect on certain values that lead us all into creating a better future.”
