Locals get ten toilets ten times cleaner on Madiba Day
Residents roll up their sleeves to clean up and repair broken infrastructure during their 67 minutes of Madiba Day.
Water and Sanitation Skills Upgrading Programme and Bontle Ke Tlhago fulfilled their plan to repair taps, and toilets, and also clean up the streets of Diepsloot on Tuesday, 18 July. This was part of their contributions towards the 67 minutes of International Mandela Day.
“We repaired ten toilets on the day and we did a clean-up of the whole block of the street where we repaired the toilets. our expectations were to clean up ten toilets because we pinpointed them in that block; they had a problem,” said Mxo Mulauzi from Bontle Ke Tlhago.
He added that the area was in Extension One, in Diepsloot, not far from the community hall that they use for community services. He said they were joined by various stakeholders who contributed to the success of the day.
“Before we got together to repair the toilets, most of them did not flush, they had leakages, and some of them burst and were not working anymore. So, people struggled with the sewage which created a route that went down the stream. We fixed the leaking taps and repaired the toilets and are now flushing. We replaced some of the basins amongst other broken materials.”
“The event was a collaboration between many organisations and businesses, we were happy to assist,” said the chairperson of the Greater Kyalami Conservancy (Gekco), Kristen Kallesen.
