WATCH: Paulshof arsonist caught on camera

Paulshof residents call on the community to help them identify a notorious arsonist who may be responsible for three fires.

Paulshof residents have called on the community to help them identify and deal with a notorious arsonist. According to Paulshof Hill resident Lita Jacobsen, everything started on June 24 when a fire broke out on the K60 then another on July 3. July 12 saw another breakout but the alleged arsonist was caught on camera and now the community is considering offering a reward to anyone with information regarding the attacks.

“There was a fire on the K60 on June 24 and another on July 3. So, the recent one was the third over a few weeks. Not sure of the cause of the other two but could be arson also but results in valuable resources and manpower being wasted,” said Jacobsen.

The community is still contemplating offering a reward but are concerned that it may lead to an influx of false information or those responsible being tipped off.

“If a reward is substantial, it perpetuates the possibility of false disclosures. We have had the experience of rewards for missing pets which started a cycle of pets being intentionally “kidnapped” for a possible reward. We plead and hope that good citizenry prevails and help put a stop to those responsible for the fires. We need to consider the loss of wildlife and the potential damage to the many thatch properties on this stretch of road,” said Paulshof Hill’s Karolynn van Vuren.

“The Community Police Forum and the security teams who are on the perimeter watch cannot do much but be on the lookout. The only thing that can be done is to get the response teams to come out when being called as more cameras and more patrols can be costly,” said Alma Manders of the Sandton sector 1 CPF.
