Kusini host skills programme for unemployed youth

The Water Champions programme is an initiative that aims to train 30 unemployed youth to acquire skills and accreditation in the basics of water technology and treatment.

A Fourways-based enterprise provides water treatment facilities to rural settlements while providing jobs to unemployed youth across the country. Kusini Water is a social enterprise that builds water treatment systems from nanotechnology and locally sourced macadamia nutshells to provide clean drinking water to people.

The company’s employment initiative, The Kusini Water Champions is a skills development programme aimed at unemployed young people in the country. The programme gives technical training to young people, primarily unemployed women, to gain the skills and national qualifications in the basics of water technology and treatment. Since its launch, the programme has trained 90 water champions and built seven water kiosks across the country, and now the 6th annual Gauteng Kusini Water Champions boot camp will be held in June.

An example of the water treatment systems models was on display at the launch.

The top 10 successful candidates from each province are selected to participate online in the first half of the boot camp, and the top four will be selected to join the in-person boot camp where they will be trained to run and own water kiosks.

Murendeni Mafumo, founder of Kusini Water said, “We urge all aspiring water champions in the country to take up this opportunity. Access to clean water and sanitation remains a priority, and this programme allows us to partner with young people from diverse communities and share critical skills. It also gives them a head start to create long-term sustainable solutions to water challenges in their communities.”

According to Mafumo, the ultimate goal is to improve economic participation by training aspiring water champions to run and own water kiosk businesses in their communities. Over the past six years, 90 South Africans have received national certificate training in Community Water, Health, and Sanitation promotion (NQF Level 2) from Kusini Water.

All aspiring water champions are urged to apply to take part in the Gauteng Kusini Water Champions boot camp. It will take place virtually between May 5-7 May, and then in person between May 12–14.
