Beaulieu hockey men just brush past Shumbas in heated league match

A close encounter between the Beaulieu and Shumbas hockey teams saw tensions rise as they went head to head

Beaulieu Hockey Academy and Shumbas Hockey Club locked horns at a close encounter that saw the former barely scrape home.

Three minutes into the first chukka, Shumbas player Meric Martin brought an early lead from a penalty corner. A number of penalty corners for Beaulieu saw all of them saved by the Shumbas goalkeeper.

Going into the second quarter, Beaulieu striker, Dalpiarro Langford used his skill to level the scoreboard for his team. It was the only goal to go in for Beaulieu as the strikers struggled to convert chances at goal. A combination of excellent defence and strong goalkeeping from Shumbas saw Beaulieu unable to extend their lead.
Halftime saw both teams reflect on the match so far, with Shumbas looking happier.

The second half began with tense energy as both teams were hungry for more goals. Six minutes into the third quarter, Rusten Abrahams utilised a penalty corner for his team. Beaulieu went up 2 – 1. Shumbas captain, Bryce Cressy dribbled the ball past Beaulieu’s defence to equal the match once more.
Two minutes later, Langford scored another goal for his team to put Beaulieu ahead 3 – 2. With 28 seconds left in the chukka, Shumbas won another penalty corner that was saved on the line by Beaulieu’s Reza Rosenberg.

Fawaaz Kahder extended Beaulieu’s lead when he tapped the ball in from a penalty corner. Two quick goals from Shumbas saw Beaulieu scramble for a victory and defence.
Langford came through once more for his team to get a hat-trick and victory for Beaulieu. Both teams kept the intensity with two minutes left in the match. With the final result being 5 – 4, Beaulieu obtained three points.

Beaulieu is set to play against old foes, Old Eds on May 7 to continue the league.
