Roedean School victorious in Crawford International Lonehill’s U15 Shaun Fuchs water polo tournament

The annual U15 Shaun Fuchs tournament saw 20 schools around South Africa show off their best water polo skills at Crawford International Lonehill.

Crawford International Lonehill was host to a number of up-and-coming water polo players from the U15 age group in its yearly tournament.

The U15 Shaun Fuchs tournament made its debut in 2009. It was a direct response to a lack of junior girls’ U15 national water polo tournaments.
Roedean School was crowned gold medallist of this year’s competition.

Sports coordinator at the school, Kelsey White said the event went incredibly well with the number of schools from all over the country that took part. “There were many supporters around our campus and beautiful aquatic centre. The event ran smoothly with the weather on our side too,” she said.
“To help develop the younger levels of water polo, the tournament was introduced and has grown from only local schools competing to now 20 schools taking part with more knocking on the door.”

With Roedean’s win, they were not the only school who impressed at the tournament. “Reddam Constantia and Hershel from Western Cape were strong contenders. St Stithians College also displayed some very talented play,” she said.
“The Crawford team was a very young team and was an invitational team with some players playing from schools that were not part of the tournament. They placed seventh overall.”

In the future, White said there is a hope to expand the tournament to more water polo players in the country with the frequent success the competition brings. “We are hoping to host a boys’ tournament and possiblly a junior school tournament in the future. We look forward to growing the tournament each year and making it a spectacle for players and supporters,” she concluded.
