The matric Class of 2022 of Fourways High School felt a sense of excitement and relief as they collected their matric results.
Friends had caught up after a long holiday and stressful night of waiting for the results to be published. Conversations abounded the whole morning about what the next plans after high school would be.
The school was elated at its 99.5% pass rate, an increase from last year. Other statistics included a bachelor’s degree pass of more than 82% and a tertiary entrance of about 98%.
The principal at the school Andrew Holliday expressed his pride in the matrics given the difficulties with Covid.
“I’m pleased with how the results came out. They are the group that has probably suffered the longest, and for that reason, we were very concerned before they wrote. But the results were very pleasing to us,” he said.
“We didn’t get 100% pass but we got better than we hoped for which is great. A big congratulations and well done. We as a school are very proud of them. They had a lot of pressure put on them but they rose to the occasion and they need to take that lesson with them for the rest of their lives.”
Looking at the current group of Grade 12 learners, Holliday said there would be a continued effort to increase the pass rate next year.
“We are putting a lot more effort into trying to intervene individually. We are putting a lot of focus on student support. Individual learners need help and support. We still want to improve the quality of matrics.
“If we’re focusing on improving the quality of the matric pass for every learner, we’re going to end up with a 100% pass rate. That’s not our focus; our focus is on trying to make sure every learner passes while making sure they have a quality pass.”
