Paws R Us gets overwhelming turnout at fundraising event

Organised by local resident Nina Engelbrecht, Midrand-based dog shelter Paws R Us saw a number of community members attend a fundraising event with lots of fun activities.

Musical chairs, various dog treats, and raffle prizes were some of the activities planned for a local animal NPO fundraising event in Kyalami.

The community of Kyalami banded together, through resident and organiser of the event Nina Engelbrecht, to raise funds at Country Pub Kyalami for Paws R Us based in Midrand. The sun beamed down on attendees, and dogs present at the fundraiser got to enjoy lots of attention and sunlight.

Shannon van Aardt from Paws R Us in Midrand was grateful for the community’s turnout at the fundraiser. She elaborated a little more on what the shelter does.
“We take in dogs that have been found on the street and never claimed or any dogs that have to be rehomed for whatever reason. We have around 120 dogs, but we don’t do puppies or cats. We focus on dogs, and older dogs as well,” she said.

“Today, Nina out of the goodness of her heart has organised this event where the proceeds will be coming to us. All the proceeds, we use it to feed the dogs and we have carers on site that we pay their wages.”She explained that the shelter will be closing its doors, but it will be done in phases as the dogs currently at the location are in need of forever homes. The staff and rent of the space still need to be paid for, which explains the need for the funds donated at the fundraising events.

“The directors have also started a programme with the carers because we don’t want to leave them without jobs in a few months’ time, so we are upskilling the carers and trying to find them other jobs, for them and their families.”

Other activities on the day included fancy dress where owners and their fluffy companions put on their best outfits for judging. With the festive season approaching, many owners and dogs found inspiration for their outfits from Christmas.

Dogs available for adoption at Paws R Us have their details shared on the organisation’s Facebook page, which van Aardt says is incredibly active.
