Phalatse gives Gauteng Dept of Health ultimatum over unpaid municipal account

The City of Johannesburg has threatened to cut off services to the Gauteng Department of Health if it does not settle it’s R240-milllion municipal bill by November 25.

Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse has given the Gauteng Department of Health until Friday (November 25) to settle its R240-million municipal bill or face cut-offs.

According to Phalatse during a briefing about the City’s finances ahead of council on November 23, previous attempts to get payment from the provincial department have not yielded any results.

“On 15 November 2022, the City wrote to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, outlining debts owed to the City by Provincial Departments and Entities.”

Phalatse noted that the correspondence has not been responded to so the City will commence with the termination of services.

The City continues Buya Mthetho operations in an effort to collect more outstanding revenue owed.

Phalatse encourages residents and businesses across the city with outstanding amounts to pay their municipal bills.

Recent Buya Mthetho revenue collection operations by the Revenue Shared Services Centre saw an estimated R150-million collected in unpaid municipal bills.

Account holders who may be struggling to fulfil payments can come to any of the City’s walk-in centre’s to make a payment arrangement.

“Make sure you apply for all the rebates or programmes for which you qualify, including the Extended Social Package for indigent households.”
