Sunninghill Ratepayers Association partner with private security company to keep motorists safe during flooding

The chairperson of the ratepayers' association says the road was closed to prevent possible incidents of cars being swept away by water when levels rise higher than the bridge.

The Sunninghill Ratepayers Association has warned motorists to avoid using Witkoppen Bridge near the taxi holding area during heavy rains and flooding.

The chairperson of the ratepayers association, Linda Gildenhuys said they were working closely with a private security company operating in the area to help close the road when the water rises above the bridge and open when it was safe to cross.

She said this is to prevent possible incidents of cars being swept away by water when the level rises above the bridge.

Water rises above the bridge on Witkoppen Road near Sunninghill Taxi Rank.

“We work closely with the security provider contracted to the Sunninghill Ratepayers Association. One of the duties they perform for us is keeping an eye on this bridge during heavy rain. Over the years cars have been swept off this bridge.”

Gildenhuys said, “The minute they inform us that rainwater is lapping onto the road from the river, we inform the community to avoid it and they close the road and monitor it. Once safe they open the road once again.”

She encouraged residents and motorists to constantly drive cautiously when it’s raining and use alternative routes if possible.
