Local station commander calls on communities to help young girls dodge teenage pregnancy

Douglasdale Police Station commander says that communities need to create programmes that will help young girls avoid derailing their lives by getting pregnant.

The station commander at Douglasdale Police Station, Brigadier Veeshani Arikum has encouraged young girls to focus on building their future through education and refrain from things that can lead to pregnancy.

Speaking to Fourways Review at the sidelines of Miss Umoja 2022 in Fourways under the theme ‘Say No to Teenage Pregnancy’, Arikum said teenage pregnancy was one of the most common challenges facing society. “Teenage pregnancy is one of the biggest challenges in our society, especially in impoverished communities. We have a high rate of abandoned children and children placed in orphanage homes because of teenage pregnancy. Poverty has been identified as one of the contributing factors to the scourge. ”

She said the lack of empowerment projects for girls in different communities was one of the main reasons many young girls fell pregnant at a very young age. “Many communities have no project or programmes that can help young girls stay away from wrongdoing. They spend their free time doing nothing and end up getting the wrong attention from boys or old men which leads to pregnancy.”

She said communities need to create programmes that will help young girls avoid snares of teenage pregnancy.
