Local aspiring actors and film makers encouraged to utilise free classes at Selaelo Chuene Art Centre
Director at Selaelo Chuene Art Centre said more than 120 youngsters have been trained through this programme
The director at Selaelo Chuene Art Centre, Babikie ‘Papie’ Sathekge says the art centre has embarked on a mission to unearth and nurture young local talent by teaching them the basics of performance art.
This was after the centre resumed its classes to teach and equip local aspiring actors and filmmakers with the necessary skills following a two-year break.
“We started our classes to teach young aspiring actors, directors, scriptwriters and filmmakers in 2018. We moved to Riversands Incubation Hub in 2019 after one of our sponsors offered us a space to do this work.”
He said more than 120 youngsters have been trained through this programme and some were now part of big productions in the South African acting industry.
“We’ve trained more than 120 youngsters through this programme and some of them you see on TV every day. Our aim is to help youngsters from disadvantaged communities like Diepsloot, Riverside, Cosmo City and others to have access to quality and world-class kind of training in performing art.”
He urged parents to allow children who want to join their classes to come and do what they love. He said, “We bring seasoned and experienced actors, scriptwriters and film directors almost every week to come and transfer skills with our learners. We urge and encourage parents to allow their children to do what they love and not deprive them of their right to choose what they want to be.”
