Daily Bread non-profit organisation to hosts its sixth annual Miss Umoja pageant

The founder of Daily Bread said the pageant helps equip young girls with skills development and mentorship and teaches them about the dangers of teenage pregnancy.

In an effort to empower young girls from the Joburg North community, Fourways-based non-profit organisation, Daily Bread will host its sixth annual Miss Umoja pageant on October 30.

Founder and chairperson of Daily Bread non-profit organisation, Charmaine McGinley said the pageant helps equip young girls with skills development, and mentorship and teaches them about the dangers of teenage pregnancy.

“Our organisation works with a number of communities of Joburg north where we offer different kinds of humanitarian aid to the poor. Through Miss Umoja beauty pageant we want to help empower young girls with necessary life skills that will help them become better women.”

A total of 16 young girls from Diepsloot, Cosmo City, Fourways and Riverside will compete for the crown.

Grade 11 learner at Blue Eagle High School in Cosmo City, Chantel Mahlangu (16) said she was hoping to make it to the top three this year.

“Last year I participated in Miss Umoja and learned a lot from it. Although I didn’t make it to the top three it helped me grow and I’m hoping to learn even more this year and make it to the top three.”

McGinley urged community members to come out in their numbers on the day of the event to support the contestants.
