Preserving the planet for future generations
Gecko chairperson said educating communities on the importance of recycling and throwing garbage in designated areas was key to preserving the planet for future generations.
The chairperson of Greater Equestrian Kyalami Conservancy non-profit organisation (Gecko), Kristin Kallesen has encouraged municipalities to work together with their communities to combat the scourge of littering and illegal dumping.
This was after her organisation joined forces with City Parks and Rotary Club Kyalami on a World Clean-Up Day to clean up the Jukskei River in Glenferness.
She said educating residents on the importance of recycling and throwing garbage in designated areas was key to preserving the planet for future generations.
“Our organisation has been part of this cleaning campaign since its inception. We strongly believe that events like World Clean-Up Day can help raise awareness about the importance of preserving our planet for future generations.”
She urged communities and local businesses to make it a norm to participate in clean-up initiatives in their neighbourhoods.
“Every one of us has a responsibility to protect the environment because we have only one planet that sustains us all. We must learn to respect the environment by throwing garbage in designated areas. Water species and wild animals are at risk because of our actions that have a negative impact on their livelihoods.”
Member of Rotary Club Kyalami Debbie Smit said the members of her organisation were always seeking ways of making their community a better place.
“As Roatary Club Kyalami we strongly believe that a clean environment can have a positive impact on the community. We came here to be part of this great movement that seeks to protect our planet.”
