Reddam House Helderfontein learner believes negative effects of climate change can be prevented

Reddam House learner believes communities can play a role in the fight against climate change.

Grade 11 learner at Reddam House Helderfontein, Thuli Khumalo, writes:

Contrary to popular belief, climate change and global warming is not the same thing.

Global warming is essentially the heating up of the planet due to the depletion of the ozone layer (a layer in the atmosphere that protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet rays), allowing for more UV rays to enter the atmosphere.

Climate change is an effect of global warming, as the earth’s temperature increases, certain areas experience intense rains and storms while others become drier. Wet areas can experience drought and drier areas may become wet.

This influences the different plants and animals in that area which affects the ecosystem and environment, which influences us as humans. Many human activities influence the rate of global warming and climate change. An increase in population creates a higher demand with limited resources.

The use of single-use materials, not just plastic, and non-biodegradable products significantly harm the environment and wildlife. The release of fossil fuels into the atmosphere from car exhausts, factories, sewage and many other gases further deplete the ozone layer.

Despite the terrifying reality of climate change, there are ways that we can help. Reducing, reusing, and recycling single-use materials and using alternative sources of energy (water, wind, sun).
There are also ways that you, as an individual, can help – educating communities, limiting water usage and always remembering to reuse, reduce, and recycle.

Global warming is still reversible if we work together as a global community to save the planet.
