St David’s Marist Inanda makes a difference in Diepsloot

A group from St David’s Marist Inanda recently spent their day making a lasting change in the Diepsloot community, planting trees and building classrooms with eco-bricks.

A group of learners at St David’s Marist Inanda recently lent a few helping hands to make a lasting change at the GMFM Church in Diepsloot.

Twenty-two learners, alongside a group from St Mary’s School, joined the non-profit organisation Khensani’s Collection to plant trees, clean up litter and assist in the building of the new classrooms.

“The theme was environmentally focused and the positive impact that the eco-bricks have on the Diepsloot community as well as the environment in general.

“Our boys also had a chance to interact with the learners that attend the community school at the church,” said the school’s Claudio Marangoni, who joined the boys on the day.

According to Marangoni, the school has been collecting eco-bricks since 2019 as part of an environmental awareness initiative aimed at making learners aware of waste.

An eco-brick is a 2-litre plastic bottle that is packed tightly with clean and dry non-recyclable material, such as plastic.

“After having collected hundreds of eco-bricks, I needed to find an organisation where we could donate them. I was introduced to Diana Musara of Khensani’s Collection, an education-focused organisation in Diepsloot, by the Rotary Club,” said Marangoni.

One of the projects run by the non-profit includes building classrooms with eco-bricks, a project which St David’s Marist Inanda has contributing to since April 2021.
