VOX POP: Why is it important to celebrate Heritage Day?

The day South Africans celebrate their heritage, no matter the race is one where people are united in their differences.

Another Heritage Day is upon us when everyone gears up in their cultural attire to celebrate their origins and traditions on September 24.

The Fourways Review hit the streets to ask locals why it was important to celebrate Heritage Day.
This is what they had to say…

CARL JAMBO: It’s a way to unite us. We’re always hearing bad news and things that divide us. We forget about the things that make this nation a great one. Even though we’re all different, we come together and become one beautiful thing.
HAILEY CHETTY: I think it’s about supporting each other’s different religions and cultures, as well as accepting each other for their different rights.
NALEDI KOJANA: The whole concept of diversity and everyone showcasing the different [aspects] of their cultures. Sharing and learning from each other is important, and I think Heritage Day lives up to the term ‘Rainbow Nation’.
NATALIE JENA: It’s about celebrating your culture and where you come from. I’m Shona, and we all have different tribes, totems and people. There’s a lot of xenophobia, and not all of us are like that.
ISABELLA GUTHRIE: The day is about showing off people’s different cultures, religions and it also shows how we can come together as one unit. We can be around each other, enjoy each other’s company no matter how different we are.
