Sasol employee shares his first Comrades experience

A local runner rejoiced after finishing his first Comrades race.

A Witkoppen Road Sasol petrol station employee aims to run next year’s Comrades Marathon after competing in his first this year.

Lawrence Monkwe, who has worked at the company for 20 years, is dedicated to long-distance running.
The runner recalled the moments of completing the Comrades Marathon.

“It was my first Comrades Marathon race. From the start until close to around 80km it was going well. However, the moment of getting tired and cramping comes. I had to tell myself that I had to finish.
“When I reached the stadium, my foot was killing me but that moment of seeing the stadium brought so much excitement to me,” he said.

The down-race took place on August 28, starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in the Moses Mabhida Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal. The last race took place in 2019 due to the ongoing Covid-19 regulations.
With next year’s Comrades date yet to be decided, Monkwe said he had already started training.
