Paulshof Spruit Park will be getting in the action for Spruit Day set to take place on September 17

A number of Spruit Day clean-up events will be taking place throughout the city of Johannesburg along the Braamfontein Spruit, with Paulshof and surrounding areas encouraged to join in.

With Spruit Day fast approaching, community members and residents are encouraged to gear up and take part in the fight to keep the environment clean.

Spruit Day and World Clean-Up Day fall on September 17.
The Braamfontein Spruit which flows from Barnato Park High School in Braamfontein towards the greater Kyalami area will be part of the clean-up.

Chantal Nativel who is part of the organising team of #SpruitsSpritz for the clean-up taking place in Paulshof hoped to have a lot of people take part in the day’s events throughout the country but more so in the Paulshof area.

“There are activities taking place along the entire length of the Braamfontein Spruit, some sections of the Sand Spruit and the Jukskei. That’s just in Johannesburg.
“What makes our section on the Paulshof and Sunninghill border so fabulous is that we are gathering at the confluence of the Braamfontein and Sand Spruit where the Jukskei begins. What a powerful place to call all water lovers to a day of active citizenry, and the opportunity to gather as a community and enjoy our park,” she said.

Running from 08:00 until 14:30, the schedule of events for the day includes:

  • 08:00 – 10:00: Mugg and Bean Cambridge Crossing is serving complimentary coffee onsite where some will be able to redeem a complimentary cappuccino with a breakfast voucher.
  • 10:45 registration for 11:00 – 12:30. There will be Citizen Science demos in which minors must be accompanied by an adult and bring a fishing/pool net and plastic tray.
  • 13:00 – 14:00 Rivonia Riding Club is offering free pony rides for children.

For the clean-up on the day, locals attending should bring hardy gloves, garden tools/wire cutters, refillable water bottles, hats, sunscreen and snacks.
Several environmental NPOs will be joining in the day’s activities including Armour (Action for Responsible Management of Our Rivers), Outa’s WaterCAN (Community Action Network) testing the water for E Coli, and many others.
“We also encourage others to join in the vetiver grass planting party to stabilise collapsing spruits’ banks.”
