Bryanston Warriors Football Club relish in league victory

With the Rand Central Local Football Association league now completed, a Douglasdale-based team enjoyed the fruits of a five-month long season.

A local football team celebrated the hard yards of a successful season.

The Bryanston Warriors Football Club (BWFC) first team situated in Douglasdale was crowned Rand Central Local Football Association (RCLFA) league winners. The team played in the SAB Regional League play-offs but unfortunately lost.

Chairwoman of the club Alison Cann labelled the season as an incredible one and applauded the team for their tenacity throughout. She added there had been a great improvement in the past two seasons.
“The groundwork, so to speak, for this success was very much laid in the hard work put in by the boys last season. All the teams we faced this season offered us different challenges that we needed to overcome.

Skills and dribbling will be the order of the day next season in the Rand Central Local Football Association league for the Bryanston Warriors Football Club.

“The first round of matches was difficult for the new boys to the RCLFA premier division but the second round matches were a lot tighter affairs as the teams were up to speed in terms of fitness and preparations,” she said.
The team may have lost the play-off match and missed out on a chance to represent the Rand Central League in the SAB, they have qualified for the Top Eight Cup due to finishing first in their league.

While the team has been built on unity as opposed to individual brilliance, Cann singled out the captain Matthew Billet for his leadership qualities.
“I always tell the boys that it’s not just your footballing ability that will keep you playing first team football at BWFC, it’s your strength of character, commitment and attitude amongst other things that will help you achieve your dreams as a footballer.

“Matty [Billet] embodies all the above, the first one at practice and the last to leave. He’s always available to assist the younger players with anything. He’s a coach’s dream of a leader. He will always be my go-to guy,” she told Fourways Review.
Looking to the next season, Cann said there could be some improvements made should the team play in the SAB League.

“We definitely need strength in depth, particularly with the players in the 19 to 23-year age group. We need to build our team around this age group as it is a requirement in the SAB League to field a team comprising 50% in this age group.”
