Leeuwkop Correctional Service officials and parolees get their hands rolled up their sleeves and had their hands dirty on Mandela Day.

Area commissioner at Leeuwkop Correctional Service Centre, Napo Moasi said partnerships between communities, government institutions and private sector can help build a better society.

The correctional facility and companies like Metropolitan, Old Mutual and Gracepoint Church joined hands to clean the banks of the Jukskei River in Sunninghill on Mandela Day (July 18).

Moasi said 200 officials and 18 parolees and probationers from Leeuwkop Correctional Services visited different communities and embarked on different initiatives as part of this year’s Mandela Day celebration.

“As the Correctional Services Department, we are very passionate about participating in community initiatives that seek to improve lives in communities. We work with stakeholders to make communities a safer place to live in. Our officers are always striving to lend a helping hand through different kinds of initiative in order to make our communities better.”

She said another group of officials together with 18 parolees and probationers from the facility joined a cleaning campaign in Tembisa along the Hennops River. “This shows that a lot can be achieved if we join hands and stretch our resources to make a difference in the community.”
