Community members visit guide-dogs for Mandela Day
The association was also visited by councillor of Ward 93, Vino Reddy who also took part in the day’s activities.
Community members were given the chance to visit the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind on Mandela Day, July 18.
The day was to give community members a chance to spend 67 minutes in the shoes of a visually impaired person, whether it be to walk a guide dog blindfolded, or find out more about the assistance and techniques visually impaired people use for walking, drinking and eating.
The morning activities also included a tour of the association’s facilities, presentations by orientation and mobility practitioners on how they assisted the visually impaired with everyday life, and a puppy training class in progress. Visitors also got to enter into a draw to win a new Suzuki Swift and Burgman 125cc scooter, as the association had a goal of selling 6 700 raffle tickets to raise R67 000.
Councillor of Ward 93 Vino Reddy also joined the activities and took a guide dog for a walk.
“It’s a different experience. When you’re here, you don’t walk in their [visually impaired people] shoes, you get to experience it for a short time. Once it’s done, you don’t keep quiet about this experience, you share it with a lot of people,” he said.
