Dainfern College aims high with eco-bricks collection

The school has so far donated 7 813 eco-bricks to Khensani's Collection.

Local school Dainfern College is celebrating 25 years of excellence in education in 2022, and to mark the occasion, the school has pledged to build and donate 25 000 eco-bricks in collaboration with Khensani’s Collection. These bricks will be used to build a classroom for underprivileged children in Diepsloot.

An eco-brick is a two-litre plastic bottle packed tightly with clean and dry non-recyclable materials. These bottle bricks have been used around the world for over 20 years as an insulative building brick and a powerful tool to connect people with their waste.

Khensani’s Collection is a registered non-profit company which aims to provide hope through education and a number of initiatives, including mentorship and entrepreneurship programmes, and workshops. Their current focus is on the children of Diepsloot, and with one 45² eco-brick classroom already successfully built in 2020, they have set their sights on building a larger 168m² building containing three classrooms, bathrooms and other facilities. They estimate a project of this magnitude will require 70 000 eco-bricks.

The college has since the start of 2022 been encouraging its students, staff and families to contribute to this massive undertaking. “Whether it be making eco-bricks at home, or collecting bottles and plastic to make eco-bricks at school, the college community has really made an effort to help us reach our goal,” said the school’s digital media and communications officer Ashley van Aswegen. To date, the college has donated an estimated 7 813 eco-bricks, reusing an estimated 3 900 kg of non-recyclable plastic.

The college’s eco-brick collection will continue throughout the year, and families are encouraged to continue collecting and building.
