Dainfern gets in Wimbledon spirit

Tennis Inc in Dainfern hosted many players, young and old in a Wimbledon-style tennis tournament over a two-day period.

Tennis enthusiasts from around the Fourways area got to take part in a fun-day tournament at Dainfern on July 2 and 3.

Tennis Inc, based in Dainfern, hosted a number of children and adult players of various skill levels for a Wimbledon Day. Both days saw doubles teams take part in a series of matches on grass to create their own Wimbledon experience.

The tournament ran in round-robin format with the invitational matches on the Sunday running with a ‘best of nine games’ format.
General manager and coach at Tennis Inc Samantha White said the turnout for the Wimbledon fun day was a great one especially since the club had not had a big event since the coronavirus outbreak.

“The Wimbledon tournament is currently taking place and it takes place on grass. We always play on hard courts so it’s nice to have a grass court experience for the children and adults,” she said.
White said on Saturday, 32 children played in the morning and 32 adults in the afternoon in the social events. On the Sunday, 24 children and 24 adults took part in the weekend’s activities.

Children who took part and won in their finals matches were awarded trophies.
“This is the first big event that we’ve had since the regulations have elapsed. We didn’t do it since we couldn’t get many people during Covid. Since regulations have been lifted, we took the opportunity to host something, especially since Wimbledon is taking place now, which makes the timing perfect.”
