Beaulieu women come up short against Wanderers

The women’s Beaulieu side had a tough encounter against a strong Wanderers side in which they lost 3–1.

A young Beaulieu lost 1–3 against Wanderers Hockey Club in a Southern Gauteng Hockey Association outdoor league premier women’s Elite Top Six match on July 3.

The first half of the match saw both sides in a 0-0 stalemate, with plenty chances presented but excellent goalkeeping from both keepers. The next 30 minutes were set to be an interesting affair for spectators at Morningside Country Club.

The beginning of the third chukka saw a missed chance for Beaulieu to go ahead. Almost two minutes into the third chukka, Jamié Povall of Wanderers scored for her team after having to retake a penalty corner three times. Another goal came in quick succession for Wanderers thanks to Jessica Rosseau to put her side 2–0 up.

In the last chukka, Beaulieu came back fighting and their efforts paid off with a field goal from Megan Betchoo two minutes in.
A slight mix-up in the Beaulieu defence saw good teamwork by Wanderers strikers Nompilo Thenjwayo and Sasha Dikotla, with the latter extending their lead to 3–1.

“We gave the ball away unnecessarily. There were a few times where we lost the ball, but I think in general we need to defend as a unit more. When defending, we need to hold onto the ball and not give it away.
“We were 2–1 down after getting on the board, but there were some silly mistakes when Wanderers picked up the ball and scored again. We’ve had a few players at IPT, so we will see how we do in the next match,” he said.
