A local poet and songwriter shines at the Poet Tree competition

The local author and mental health advocate said the completion offered her an opportunity to share her poems with a wider audience.

A local author and Grade 11 learner at Heronbridge College Jess Robus proved to be the cream of the crop when she scooped three trophies in the Poet Tree competition recently held in Pretoria.

She was announced as the overall winner of this year’s competition that was organised by Pretoria Youth Theatre.

The 15-year-old author also bagged first place for ‘own dramatised poem’ and second place in the ‘own written poem’ category.

Jess who is also a mental health advocate, songwriter and vocalist, published a book, A few slivers of light in June last year with a collection of her poems.
“Overall the poetry competition was a lovely experience and it not only inspired me to keep writing and sharing my words with others, it also gave me a whole lot of new opportunities for collaborations and exposed me to the incredible writing of my peers and their passion for the written word.”
