Domestic workers forum hosted in Lonehill
The forum was held in for the first time in two years.
The Douglasdale Police Station, the Lonehill Resident Association and Fidelity hosted a Domestic Workers Forum on June 23.
Sergeant Nicholus Mokwena, the Social Crime Prevention Coordinator for the Douglasdale Police Station, said that it is important for the police to be involved in these forums because it is a way for the police to combat and raise awareness on crime. He added that it is also important for the workers to have these forums because it provides them with tips to prevent crime.
“These people are very important because most of the time they are on the properties when we experience house robberies and hijackings that are happening within a complex. We need to make sure that they have all the crime tips so they can, if possible, prevent such crimes.
The forum covered various safety topics such as GBV, domestic violence and safety and security tips. According to Shelley Miller, who is involved in marketing and communication at the Lonehill Resident Association, the forum is aimed at providing the workers with different skills such as life skills and security. Due to Covid-19 the forum was put on hold for two years.
Pamphlets were handed out with information on domestic violence as well as how to get a protection order if needed. Freeda Borkes, a member of the CPF Sector 4, said that the meeting is about building bridges between the community and the police.
The workers were treated to refreshments after the forum and had the opportunity to talk and ask the organisers questions afterwards.
