Karaoke session brings donations of sanitary pads

Paulshof community members enjoyed a night singing well-known karaoke tunes while doing their bit for a Randburg-based community home.

Local community members channelled their inner singer at a weekly karaoke session at Off the Grid in Paulshof while also contributing to a local NPO on June 16.

The karaoke session came with a Youth Day twist. With the day centred on the youth and youth needs, attendees came dressed in a school uniform and were asked to donate sanitary pads for girls who miss school due to having their period.

Hosts of the karaoke session, Ru Entertainment run by Duma Kameru and Sade Anderson, will be handing over the pads to girls at Mother of Peace Community Home based in Randburg. The home assists women and children who have been abused and, according to Anderson, there are teenage girls in the home’s care who are in need of sanitary pads.

Anderson, who is a Northriding resident, was the MC on the night and also took part in the karaoke session.

She said this was the second time an event was held to raise awareness on social issues during a karaoke session at Off the Grid. The pub and entertainment company have collaborated to host events every Thursday since mid-2020. “I decided to have these events once a month to highlight a lot of issues. This is the second event we’re hosting like this as the last time we had a pyjama party,” she said.

“I wanted to do something different and get the karaoke community involved. Instead of it always being a party situation, I thought let’s give back.
“Having access to pads is so difficult for a lot of girls. I reached out to a few homes since I’m not really in contact with any schools.”

Anderson said she was ‘pleasantly surprised’ with the turnout. “While not many stuck to the theme tonight, the donation of sanitary pads has been great. I want to also use this platform to highlight things like this that often get overlooked in a place like this. I’m really happy with the turnout tonight.”
