The MMC said the newly opened educational facility which can accommodate up to 60 learners a day will help teach youngsters about the importance of preserving nature.

The MMC for Community Development Ronald Harris has urged residents, schools and community-based organisations to join hands with the City in the fight against illegal dumping.

Speaking at the official opening of an environmental education centre in Rietfontein Nature Reserve on June 10, Harris said today’s generation had a responsibility to save the planet for future generations.

He said the newly opened educational facility which could accommodate up to 60 learners a day, would help teach youngsters about the importance of preserving nature.

“This facility will help us expose young people to different programmes that can be utilised to save the environment. This is our third educational centre which will serve as the home for environmental education in the northern quadrant of the city.”

Harris also used the event to plant new trees at the facility to commemorate World Environment Day which is observed on June 5 every year and reminded attendees about the dangers of littering.

“I am appealing to each and every one of you here today to help us raise awareness and educate our communities about the catastrophic effects of illegal dumping and littering. What happened in Durban is the result of our actions. Climate change is real and if we continue to behave recklessly, the future generations will have no planet to inherit.”
