Member of Fitness From Africa runners club hopes for good results in the upcoming major marathons this year

The local runner said his goal was to finish among the first 20 at the Comrades Marathon and Soweto Marathon later this year.

A member of Lonehill-based runners club Fitness From Africa said participating in the Midvaal May Marathon had boosted his confidence ahead of this year’s Comrades Marathon.

Wilbred Ngulube (28), who was born in Zimbabwe and moved to South Africa to look for greener pastures, said running had been part of his life since primary school and was hoping that this year would be a good year for him.

“I chose running because it’s my talent and I’m passionate about it. I used to run at school and that’s when I realised that I was good in running and decided to stick to it. I won a number of school competitions in Zimbabwe and when I moved to South Africa I decided to take it to a professional level.”

Ngulube expressed his satisfaction with his fitness. “I recently ran a 42km marathon [Midvaal May] in Vereeniging and finished it in three hours and five seconds, and it was such a great experience and great result for me. This marathon has helped me prepare myself for this year’s Comrades Marathon in Durban in August.”

He said his goal was to finish among the top 20 in the Comrades Marathon and Soweto Marathon later this year.

“I will be running in the 55th Arthur Cresswell Ultra Marathon in Ladysmith KwaZulu-Natal on July 9 and I hope to get good results there.”
