Live Life Always volunteers team up with community members to remove litter in Jukskei River

The co-founder of Live Life Always non-profit organisation urged members of the public to become environmental ambassadors by throwing garbage in designated places.

Local environmentalist and co-founder of Live Life Always non-profit organisation, Lovemore Robson, said pollution in Jukskei River posed a threat to water species in the river.

Robson and a group of Live Life Always volunteers were joined by Glenferness community members in a clean-up campaign to remove litter in the Jukskei River on May 28, and collected 65 bags of rubbish.

He said the 309km-long Jukskei River flows through Bertrams and joins the Crocodile River before it enters Hartbeespoort Dam.

“The river is slowly becoming a ‘plastic river’ and poses a threat to water species in the river. Today we collected more than 60 bags of litter in just two hours. We are doing this because we understand the impact of litter to the environment. We hope that one day we will get support from those with financial muscle to execute this operation on a bigger scale.”

Robson urged members of the public to refrain from illegal dumping and think twice before throwing something away.

“Everything we throw away ends up in the river or in the ocean. What we do as Live Life Always will have no impact if the cause of the problem is not addressed. I would like to encourage people to use designated garbage bins or recycling bags to throw away unwanted things. If we continue doing things the way we do, the future generations will suffer because of our careless actions that can avoided.”
