Sunninghill Striders embark on long weekend marathon

Thirty members of the Sunninghill Striders Running Club travelled to Centurion for the Wally Hayward marathon.

A local Sunninghill running club took part in a marathon over the weekend of May 2.
About 30 runners from the Sunninghill Striders Running Club entered the Wally Hayward marathon at the Centurion Rugby Club. The marathon offered three distances – 10km, 21.1km and 42.2km.

Club captain Mariska Venter said there was a positive atmosphere throughout the morning of the marathon from her fellow club members.
She said, “It’s been easy getting our club members to participate. Everyone is keen to get out over the weekends. We have had our own club runs which were popular.

“As soon as races came back [as Covid-19 restrictions eased], most of our runners went back to entering races and participating. We see our runners at almost every event. Which is fantastic.”
Looking to future races, Venter said some club members are set to take part in the Om die Dam race in June and the Dolphin Coast Marathon in July.

She provided positive feedback on the marathon and how it was run and conducted. “Everyone loved it [the marathon]. We only had good feedback. The vibe was amazing and the race was well organised. Will definitely participate again,” she concluded.
