Driving a long distance can be tiring and end up boring for some children.

• Make the kids edible necklaces to munch: This idea has novelty value and practicality all rolled into one. Thread snacks with holes such as pretzels, cereal, biscuits and dried apple rings onto a string then tie it in a knot as a necklace.
• Choose your music wisely: Great music on a road trip can make the hours pass so much faster.
• Take some talking books along: Consider getting a few audio books for the journey so everyone, even the driver, can listen along together.
• Get clever with your snack packing: Buy pill organiser boxes with separate lids for each compartment to stop major spillage.
• Play some movies: Watching movies can be a great way to pass a few hours in the car. You can use an iPad or portable DVD player.
• Play number-plate bingo: This game involves the driver nominating the number of letters in the word. Everyone then has to write down a word with the number of letters in it. The players then have to keep a keen eye out on the traffic, checking each number plate that goes by and ticking off letters in their word that appear on the number plates.
