E-hailing drivers shut down industry demanding regulation

JOBURG – The e-hailing drivers intend to lodge their grievances at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on March 22 followed by the Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo in Johannesburg on March 23.

E-hailing drivers have embarked on a nationwide shutdown this week demanding that government bring regulation to the industry.

Speaking to the Gazette on March 22, protest convener Gugu Damba of Unity in Diversity said the group of drivers were in Pretoria today demanding a price hike and regulations in the industry to improve driver and passenger safety.

“We are finding ourselves vulnerable with numerous safety concerns for drivers and passengers on the apps,” said Damba.

“We hope to achieve cooperation between the apps and government. We believe that government is taking us for a ride and need to govern in this sector for regulation.”

Another protest convener Melithemba Mnguni said the drivers were demanding that the president sign a new bill and that the ministers exercised their powers to implement changes that intervened in the industry, which he said were not regulated effectively in South Africa.

The final day of the strike intends to shut down the industry in order to demand change.
