Former Ward 96 councillor shifts focus from politics to his personal life and business

FOURWAYS – The former councillor said leaving politics gave him an opportunity to focus on his life and follow his passion.

Former Ward 96 councillor Sbusiso Mthembu said leaving politics gave him an opportunity to focus on his life and follow his passion as a professional runner.

From 2016 until November last year, Mthembu served residents of Ward 96 as a councillor of the Democratic Alliance (DA). “Leaving politics gave me the opportunity to focus mainly on road running every morning and participate in major marathons. On January 16, I participated in a 21km Dis-chem half marathon in Bedfordview and finished in 1:57:35,” he said.

He lost the ward to the Rufus Maswazi of African National Congress (ANC) in the recent local government elections held in November last year. However, he said he would continue to help members of the community to have access to services from the City.

“Post local government elections, I have continued with my professional life as a qualified professional accountant. It also gave me more time to focus on my career and work at the university, and to continue with my businesses of farming soya beans and livestock in Harrismith, Free State and Amsterdam, Mpumalanga respectively. However, even though I have lost the ward to the ANC, I still service my communities mainly the suburbs as I still have access to the City officials,” he said.
