DIEPSLOOT – Station spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said the suspect was arrested in Diepsloot, Ext 2 on January 24.

A 28-year-old male suspect, charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition, was remanded in custody after he briefly appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on January 26.

Diepsloot Police Station spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said the suspect was arrested in Diepsloot, Ext 2 on January 24. “On Monday afternoon, January 24, 2022 members of Diepsloot Crime Prevention received a tip-off about a male suspect who was alleged to be in possession of an illegal firearm in Ext 2. The members proceeded to the suspect’s address. On arrival, police found a male suspect matching the description provided by an informant,” he said.

Mathebula said police acted swiftly. “Upon searching the suspect, police allegedly found a firearm (revolver) loaded with three [rounds of] live ammunition. The suspect failed to produce a licence to possess the firearm and was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition,” he said.

Mathebula added that station commander Brigadier Koena Moichela expressed his gratitude to the informant and urged community members to provide the police with information about other criminal activities happening in the community.
