Mnandi and Summit roads intersection upgrade aims to minimise traffic congestion and accidents

RIVERSANDS– Corbett said the roadworks have created dozens short term employment for local members.

A local development company, Century Property Development has embarked on a massive roadwork project to upgrade and build a two-lane roundabout on a notorious intersection on the corner of Mnandi and Summit roads in Diepsloot.

Project manager at Century Property Developments, Carlo Steenkamp said the project would cost R10 million and was triggered by high traffic congestion and frequency of accidents at the intersection.

“The inability of the provincial road authority to complete William Nicol [Drive] by the end of 2017, as originally intended, left a broken link between Sandton, Fourways and Diepsloot. Mnandi Road has seen an inordinate increase in traffic as a result,” he said.

“A signalised intersection was considered, however, due to the high cable theft risk and lack of permanent electrical infrastructure, a two-lane roundabout was favoured and approved by the provincial road authority. For night visibility, solar-charged reflective lights will be installed.”.

Chief executive officer at the company, Mark Corbett said the roadworks had created dozens of short term employment for locals.

“We believe that this particular upgrade opens up development nodes and opportunities for the locals while addressing the safety of the current ineffective two-way stop intersection. The estimated total value of the completed works will be R10 million with a three to five months construction period. All kerb and paving work are done by local contractors,” Corbett said.
