‘Remove the billboard’

DOUGLASDALE– Mottram said they also need donations for plants approved by the council for this garden, plants such as aloes, succulents, dietes and wild garlic.

Founder of Douglasdale Business and Residents Forum, Susan Mottram has asked residents to sign a petition for the removal of an alleged illegal billboard.

A billboard had been initially erected in the community garden on Douglasdale Drive, and the City of Johannesburg Planning Law Enforcement and Outdoor Advertising By-Law Unit in Region E had removed it, as reported in Billboard removed [Week ending October 15].

Apparently, another billboard had been erected by unknown contractors; not in the community garden but behind a wall adjacent to the green space. “Join us on November 20 between 08:30 and 12:00 at the intersection of Douglasdale Drive and Leslie Avenue West to restore the verge garden that was wrecked by contractors, and to sign a petition against the billboard,” she said

“The petition will call for the authorities to remove the frame and take action against those who trashed and removed 13 years of plantings by community volunteers.”

She added the petition would be submitted to the City. “We also need donations for plants approved by council for this garden.”

Operations manager at Intake, Complaints and Stakeholder Management Unit in the City of Johannesburg, Jack Sekgobela said the matter had been escalated. “The issue of an alleged illegal billboard in Douglasdale was brought to our attention and has been referred to the legal department,” Sekgobela said.
