Lonehill and some parts of Fourways experience power and water outages due to a major water pipe burst

FOURWAYS – Johannesburg Water said it has successfully repaired the pipe burst and water was being restored to the system.

Johannesburg Water said it has completed the repair of a reoccurring major burst on Cedar and Witkoppen Road this morning (November 18).

This was after many parts of Fourways were left without water after an uncommunicated shut down on November 17.

In a statement, Johannesburg Water said it has successfully repaired the pipe burst and water was being restored to the system. “[Regarding the] reoccurring major burst on Cedar and Witkoppen roads, the team has completed welding of the 45-degree bend as well as fastened the components. The affected section needs to be supported before water can be restored. The estimated time for completion will be around 09:00. Water should be restored thereafter.”

Ward 94 councillor, David Foley said the water outage also led to power outages after Eskom’s power cables were damaged during pipe repair.

“A major burst pipe repair on corner Witkoppen Road and Cedar Road started yesterday [November 17] with an uncommunicated shutdown at around 09:30. During the repair, they knocked Eskom’s cable. When restoring water, the pipe leaked and flooded the area which caused Eskom’s cable to short out. Eskom could not start cable repair until the water leak was repaired,” he said.

Foley added, “Johannesburg Water completed the pipe repair at around 05:30 this morning [November 18] and some areas were still without water. Eskom should be on-site at this point to repair damaged cables. The metro fibre in the area was also cut and needs to be repaired as well.”
