Performing artists to represent South Africa

FOURWAYS – During the recent South African Championships of Performing Arts in Rustenburg, 16 learners took home 330 medals for their performance arts.

Students of local performance arts studio Upstage Concepts will represent the country in the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles next year.

This after a brilliant showing by them in the South African Championships of Performing Arts in October.

The 16 students, all Fourways residents, achieved a number of medals in singing, dancing and acting, and as a performing arts studio, they won the Overall Top Acting Group at the national championships.

Owner of the studio, Jill Avis expressed immense pride in her students for their achievements. “I think this year was extra special because the learners have been so limited with opportunities to perform live, so to see them shining on stage was wonderful,” she said.

“I was especially proud of their achievements this year despite various setbacks, like having to do their prep online and keep masks on in rehearsals. They stayed so committed and produced excellent work.”

She added, “We encourage all our students to compete and perform in various competitions each year, but our main focus is to build confidence and to give them a love and passion for the performing arts.”

Avis said they had to hold classes online during the hard lockdown restrictions in the country and were unfortunate to lose their studio space.
