MMCs impressed

DIEPSLOOT – The MMC suggests the City should provide local cooperatives with more land to create job opportunities.

The MMC of Economic Development in the City of Johannesburg Thomas Mofokeng has expressed his satisfaction with the community projects aimed at creating job opportunities in Diepsloot.

This was after Mofokeng and MMC of Health and Social Development Eunice Mgcina conducted an oversight visit in different community facilities in the area on October 6.

“I am very pleased and impressed with all community projects that the City introduced as part of local economic development. Our first stop was at Tlhabologo Opportunity Centre that was opened a few years ago to help local SMMEs with things like compliance,” he said.

“The facility also assists and helps train local cooperatives while also helping job seekers with necessary skills and drafting of marketable CVs.”

Mofokeng also assisted with painting road markings on Ingonyama Street and visited the local facility that trains young people to become diamond processors. “The school has produced more than 80 diamond processors and some of them are working in the sector.”

The MMCs also visited the Northern Farm Empowerment Centre which produces vegetables that are sold at the Joburg Market in City Deep. Mofokeng said the farm created job opportunities for local residents and also contributed positively to food security.

After his walkabout at the centre, Mofokeng suggested that the City should provide local cooperatives with more land to create job opportunities. “This project is a good testimony and practical proof that people can create jobs opportunities for themselves and eradicate hunger if given land use. I will definitely encourage and support any proposal that seek to provide cooperatives with land.”
