R600 000 worth of drugs recovered

DOUGLASDALE – Five suspects were arrested by police in two separate incidents, with R600 000 worth of drugs seized.


Police arrested five suspects and seized R600 000 worth of drugs following two intelligence-driven operations towards the end of last month.

In the first operation, a suspect was arrested by a team of detectives of Organised Crime Investigations, forensic services and West Rand K9 unit in Roodepoort on charges of possession of and dealing in drugs.

Provincial spokesperson for the police, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said police operationalised information received about suspected drug dealing in the area and identified the location in Roodepoort which was not far from two local schools.

He said, “The members conducted a search of the premises and recovered various types of narcotics which included hydrophonic dagga, dagga trees and edible narcotics. The estimated value of the drugs is R200 000.

“Police also recovered two toy guns. Furthermore, a crocodile was also found on the premises. SPCA was called to handle the reptile.”

In the other operation, the Gauteng Provincial Organised Crime Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant at a Douglasdale residential complex.

Drugs suspected to be crystal meth to the estimated value of R400 000 and undisclosed amount of cash were recovered. “Four suspects found at the premises, one man and three women, were arrested. The suspects are expected to appear in the local magistrate court in due course while further investigation is underway.”

Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, commended the efforts of the National

Crime Intelligence, national detectives, forensic services and provincial officers in their quest to rid drugs off the streets of Gauteng.

“This successful arrest and seizure is a huge leap in the direction of rooting out drugs in our society. It is imperative that community members report suspicious and criminal activities in their area to the police,” he said.
