Seventy bags collected in Diepsloot clean-up

DIEPSLOOT – The area outside a local mall received some care as sommunity members and four environmental NPOs gathered to clean up the area at the weekend.

Various environmental NPOs braved the cold and rainy weather to clean a part of Diepsloot.

The Cetric Foundation, Move One Million, Action for Responsible Management of Our Rivers (Armour) and Initiatives of Change collected 70 bags of rubbish just outside a shopping mall in the area on October 2.

Cedric Mphofela, founder of the Cetric Foundation, said he was thankful for the turnout despite the rain. “We were expecting a few more volunteers today, but many cancelled because they were worried about the rain. Around 12 to 15 people came through for the clean-up.”

Mphofela claimed that the area has been a problem due to taxis who use the area and vendors who make food there. “What we’ve realised is that taxis stop there, a driving school is there as well. That part of the land is now a dumping site due to [littering on the mall property],” he said.

Mphofela said he would like to plan another clean-up initiative, weather permitting. “We would definitely like to have one this month, but we are just worried about the weather. We can plan one, and then we get a big thunderstorm. So we are just being a bit careful with planning,” he said.
